So the real question becomes: what helps your immune system stay quick, clear and coordinated?

Two teams on your immune squad: Th1 and Th2

Your immune system isn't one single thing — it works through different branches that specialise in different jobs. Two of the most important are guided by cells called T-helper cells, which fall broadly into two camps: Th1 and Th2.

You can think of these as the expressive arm and the repressive arm of your immunity.

The Th1 response is your active, front-line defence. It's cell-mediated — meaning it directly hunts down and clears threats like viruses and other invaders that get inside your cells. This is the assertive, "let's deal with this now" side of your immune system.

The Th2 response works differently. It's more about antibodies and a slower, more muted style of response. In a healthy, adaptable immune system, your body flexibly shifts between these two teams depending on what it's facing — calling up whichever branch is right for the job.

Balance is everything. Problems tend to arise not because one arm is "bad," but when your body gets stuck leaning too heavily on one side.

What tips the balance? Living in fight-or-flight

Here's where things get interesting — and where your nervous system enters the story.

When you're under constant stress, your body sits in what we call fight-or-flight: the sympathetic, high-alert state designed for short bursts of survival. It's meant to switch on when there's a genuine threat, then switch back off. The trouble is, for many of us it never really switches off.

When you live in ongoing fight-or-flight, your body keeps its stress chemistry running in the background. And this chronic stress state tends to suppress the active Th1 (expressive) arm and push the immune system toward Th2 (repressive) dominance. In other words, the branch that's so good at quick, front-line defence gets dialled down, while the body leans into a slower, more reactive style of immunity. This shift is well recognised in the field of psychoneuroimmunology — the science of how stress, the brain and immunity all talk to one another.

Picture your body like a car. Fight-or-flight is your foot flat on the accelerator. Rest, repair and immune housekeeping happen when you ease onto the brake and let the engine idle. You simply can't be flat-out and in recovery mode at the same time — and a body that's always accelerating never gets the chance to do its best defensive work.

Where the nervous system fits in

Your nervous system is the master communicator of your entire body. It's constantly reading what's happening inside you and coordinating the response — including your immune response. When it's reading the body clearly, it can help keep everything balanced and adaptable.

But when the nervous system is under tension or interference — what we call subluxation — it has difficulty accurately reading and understanding what's going on in the body. And a nervous system that can't read its environment clearly tends to do the safest thing it knows: it stays switched into protection mode. Fight-or-flight.

You can see the loop forming. Subluxation makes it harder for the nervous system to read the body → the body defaults to fight-or-flight → and, as we've seen, sitting in that state nudges the immune balance away from its quick, expressive front line. It's a bit like trying to run a household when the wiring is faulty and the messages keep getting scrambled — everything still works, but nothing works quite as smoothly as it could.

What creates this stress on the nervous system?

The tension that keeps a nervous system stuck in protection mode doesn't come from nowhere. In chiropractic we often group the causes into three broad areas — sometimes called the "three T's":

Trauma — the physical knocks of life. Accidents and falls, sporting injuries, and even birth trauma in a newborn, whose tiny nervous system can be placed under enormous physical strain during delivery.

Toxins — the chemical load our bodies carry from the chemicals in our food, water and everyday environment.

Thoughts and emotional stress — this one starts earlier than most people realise. Prenatal stress experienced by a mother can affect her developing baby; separation at birth can register as stress for a newborn; and of course, the ongoing emotional stressors of everyday life all leave their mark on the nervous system.

For a little one, these stressors stack up before they can even tell us how they feel. For adults, they often accumulate quietly over years.
