Why Does Your Body Overreact to Pollen? The Nervous System Behind Seasonal Allergies
Itchy eyes. A nose that won't stop running. That heavy, foggy feeling that shows up every spring right on cue. For a lot of practice members, seasonal allergies feel like something that just happens — bad luck, bad genetics, a bad pollen count on the news. But underneath the sneezing is a fascinating (and very logical) piece of biology, and the nervous system plays a bigger role in it than most people realise.
Your immune system is a threat detector — and it's usually right
Every day your immune system scans your environment and asks one question, over and over: friend or foe? Bacteria, viruses, splinters, damaged cells — these get flagged as foe, and your body mounts a response to deal with them. It's a remarkably accurate system.
Allergies happen when that detector makes a mistake. Pollen is harmless. It's not a threat to the body in any real sense. But in an allergic response, the immune system misreads it as dangerous, releases histamine to "fight it off," and you end up with the swelling, irritation, and mucus that come with it. The sneezing, the itchy eyes, the puffiness — that's not the pollen doing damage. That's your own body's alarm system going off unnecessarily.
So why does the alarm system get it wrong?
This is where the nervous system comes in. Your nervous system is constantly running a background process called neuroception — an unconscious scan of "is it safe right now, or is it not?" That reading doesn't just affect how you feel emotionally. It directly influences how your immune system behaves, because the two systems are deeply wired together.
When the nervous system is calm and well-regulated, it helps the immune system stay accurate — appropriately responsive to real threats, appropriately unbothered by harmless ones like pollen or dust. But when the nervous system is stuck in a chronic state of sympathetic activation — the fight-or-flight gear — the whole body shifts into a more defensive, trigger-happy posture. Threat detection gets oversensitive. The immune system, already primed for a fight, is more likely to overreact to things that were never actually dangerous.
This is one reason allergy symptoms often feel worse during high-stress seasons, poor sleep stretches, or periods of general overwhelm — even when the pollen count itself hasn't changed.
